Master/Walk-In Closet Trends

If you are considering remodeling your home or building a new home, then you should be aware of master/walk-in closet trends. Although master bedrooms in the past had no more than a small closet with a shelf and a pole or two for hanging clothes or possibly a small walk-in closet, the trend in homes today is toward large, luxurious master/walk-closets.
Layout and space
Today's master/walk-in closets require space. They should be at least 7 by 10 feet, and preferably 10 by 10 feet. That space is necessary in order to line two or three walls with shelves, cubbies and poles, as well as enough space to comfortably reach the items stored in the closet. For added convenience, the closet should also allow approximately 3 by 3 feet of floor space for a bench or chair where a person can sit to put on socks and fold laundry. In addition, it is often advantageous to include space for a full length mirror in the closet.
Storage and organization
The trend in today's master/walk-in closets is toward closet organizing systems. These systems offer a variety of compartments, each designed for specific wardrobe items or functions. For example, they may include shelves for holding sweaters, cubbies for storing hats, special shelves for shoes, poles of varying heights for hanging shirts, skirts and jackets as well as longer dresses and pants. Some closet-organizing systems even have special features for storing jewelry, ties and belts as well as clothes hampers. Often these closet-organizing systems are custom designed for the specific master/walk-in closet though do-it-yourself closet kits are available at a lower cost for those with the skills to install them.
Additional features
In addition to space and storage, increasing numbers of master/walk-in closets are including space for a laundry area. Usually these laundry areas include a stackable washer and dryer unit as well as a few feet of counter space for folding laundry and perhaps a cabinet for neatly storing detergent and fabric softener.
Added value
A well-appointed master/walk-in closet can make clothes storage and getting dressed in the morning a breeze. Moreover, an up-to-date master/walk-in closet can be a fabulous selling point when your house is on the market. If you are remodeling an older home, however, you may need to weigh space factors as well as cost factors in determining how many of the current trends you can incorporate into your renovation project. For example, if the only way you can find the space to add a luxurious walk-in closet is by losing a bedroom, then the loss of value that results from sacrificing the bedroom may outweigh the increase in value that would otherwise result from the luxurious closet.
The trend in master/walk-in closets is toward luxury. If you are building a new home or remodeling an existing home, the information in this article should help you make some wise decisions in terms of which of the trends are right for your master/walk-in closet.
